Cannabis Growing Tips for Beginners: 10 Things to Know Before You Start
Share
Introduction
Starting your first cannabis grow is exciting — but it can also feel overwhelming. There's a lot of information out there, and not all of it is reliable. This guide cuts through the noise with 10 practical, straightforward tips that will set you up for success from day one.
1. Start With the Right Seeds
Your grow can only ever be as good as your genetics. For beginners, we strongly recommend starting with either autoflowering seeds (which flower based on age, not light) or feminised seeds (which are guaranteed to be female). Both remove common beginner pitfalls. If you want to try a strain before buying a full pack, our single seeds let you test before committing.
2. Know Your Legal Position
In the UK, cannabis seeds are legal to buy, sell, and possess as a collectable or souvenir item. It is important that you understand the relevant laws before proceeding with any grow. Take a moment to read our guide on The Law on Cannabis Seeds.
3. Choose Your Growing Environment Carefully
Cannabis can be grown indoors or outdoors, and each has its pros and cons. Indoors, you have full control over light, temperature, and humidity, but you'll need equipment. Outdoors in the UK, the growing season is shorter and weather is unpredictable, but the sun is free. Wherever you grow, ensure your space has good air circulation and can maintain temperatures between 20–28°C during the day.
4. Get Your Lighting Right (Indoors)
Light is the engine of growth. For indoor growers, LED grow lights have become the go-to choice — they're energy-efficient, run cooler than older HPS setups, and produce excellent results. For autoflowering plants, an 18/6 light schedule (18 hours on, 6 off) throughout the entire grow works well. For photoperiod feminised plants, switch to 12/12 to trigger flowering.
5. Don't Overwater
Overwatering is the single most common beginner mistake. Cannabis roots need oxygen as well as water. A simple rule of thumb: lift the pot — if it feels light, it's time to water; if it feels heavy, wait. Soil should be moist but never waterlogged. Let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings.
6. Start With Quality Soil
For beginners, a good-quality peat-based or coco-perlite blend is ideal. Avoid cheap compost that may be too dense or nutrient-heavy for young seedlings. Many growers use a light seedling mix for the first few weeks, then transplant into a richer medium as the plant grows.
7. Monitor pH
pH affects how well your plant can absorb nutrients. Cannabis prefers a slightly acidic root zone: around 6.0–7.0 in soil, or 5.5–6.5 in hydro or coco. An inexpensive digital pH meter is a worthwhile investment — pH problems can look like nutrient deficiencies and send beginners down the wrong path.
8. Feed Lightly at First
Less is more when it comes to nutrients, especially for seedlings. Many good soils contain enough nutrients to sustain a plant for the first 3–4 weeks. When you do start feeding, begin at a lower dose than recommended on the bottle and work up from there. Nutrient burn (yellowing, curling tips) is far easier to recover from if caught early.
9. Watch for Pests and Mould
Good air circulation, correct humidity (40–60% in veg, 40–50% in flower), and regular inspection will keep most problems at bay. Spider mites, fungus gnats, and powdery mildew are the most common issues for UK indoor growers. Catching them early makes all the difference.
10. Be Patient — and Keep Notes
Cannabis growing is a skill that develops over time. Your first grow will teach you more than any guide can. Keep a simple grow journal — note down watering dates, feeding schedules, and anything you observe. You'll thank yourself when planning your second grow.
