How to Germinate Cannabis Seeds: A Beginner's Guide
Share
Introduction
Germinating cannabis seeds is the very first step on your growing journey — and getting it right sets the foundation for everything that follows. Whether you're a first-time grower or simply trying a new method, this guide walks you through the most reliable techniques used by growers across the UK.
What Is Germination?
Germination is the process by which a seed awakens from dormancy and sprouts its first root, known as the taproot. A healthy taproot will be white, firm, and around 1–2 cm long before you transplant the seedling into growing medium.
What You'll Need
- Quality cannabis seeds (see our Single Seeds, Feminised Seeds, or Automatic Seeds)
- Two clean dinner plates or a purpose-built germination kit
- Plain white paper towels
- Purified or pH-neutral water (pH 6.0–7.0)
- A warm, dark space (ideally 21–26°C)
The Paper Towel Method (Most Popular)
- Moisten your paper towels — they should be damp, not dripping. Excess water can cause seeds to rot.
- Place your seeds on one half of the paper towel, leaving a few centimetres of space between each seed.
- Fold the towel over to cover the seeds, then place the whole thing on a plate.
- Cover with a second plate to trap warmth and moisture, creating a mini greenhouse effect.
- Store in a warm, dark location — an airing cupboard is ideal. Check every 12–24 hours.
- Look for the taproot — most quality seeds will crack and show a taproot within 24–72 hours. Some harder shells may take up to 5 days.
The Glass of Water Method
This is a great method for seeds with a tougher outer shell:
- Fill a glass with room-temperature, pH-neutral water.
- Drop your seeds in and place in a warm, dark spot.
- Check after 24 hours — seeds that sink and show a taproot are ready to plant.
- Do not leave seeds in water for more than 24–32 hours, as they can drown.
Direct Soil Germination
If you'd prefer to skip handling fragile taproots, you can germinate directly in a light seedling compost:
- Pre-moisten your compost and fill a small pot or plug tray.
- Make a small hole about 5mm deep with a pencil or toothpick.
- Drop in your seed and lightly cover — do not compact the soil.
- Keep moist (not wet) and warm. A propagator or plastic dome helps retain humidity.
- Expect to see the seedling push through within 3–7 days.
Top Tips for a High Germination Rate
- Use quality seeds — germination rate starts with genetics. Browse our feminised seeds for reliable, consistent results.
- Keep it warm — temperatures below 18°C slow germination dramatically. A heat mat can help in cooler months.
- Don't over-handle — once the taproot is showing, handle seeds with clean tweezers and avoid touching the root itself.
- Plant taproot-down — when placing a germinated seed into soil, point the taproot downward.
- Be patient — even premium seeds can occasionally take 5–7 days. Don't give up too early.
What to Do If Seeds Don't Germinate
Occasionally a seed may fail to sprout. Check that your water wasn't too cold, your environment wasn't too dry, and that seeds were stored correctly before use (cool, dark, and dry). Most reputable seed banks offer guidance on storage — and starting with fresh, high-quality stock makes all the difference.
